Transitional justice seminars alumni visited places of memory in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The OSCE Mission to Serbia organized a study visit for former alumni of its transitional justice seminars, to memorials and places of remembrance in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), from 20 to 22 August 2025.
Over the course of the study visit, participants, eight young women and men – students and young professionals, went to Tuzla, Sarajevo, Srebrenica and Bratunac, where they visited museums, memorial centers, monuments and other landmarks commemorating crimes committed during the war in BiH. They were accompanied by a sociologist and researcher who provided them with context of each particular event, as well as by the OSCE trial monitor who informed the participants on criminal proceedings related to the crimes in question.
The participants also visited the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, to learn more about war crimes trials in BiH, as well as the OSCE Mission’s work on transitional justice in the country.
The purpose of the study visit was to complement the participants’ knowledge gained at the seminars, and to engage them in discussion on effectiveness of memorialization as a mechanism of transitional justice in Southeast Europe.
The study visit was organized with the financial support of the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC).
